Every holiday season, I see the same thing happen. I go into it with the best intentions, telling myself I will “balance it out”, not gonna eat too much…
And then real life shows up, warm rolls, sugar cookies, late dinners, rich sauces, family traditions, travel snacks, meals at weird times, and emotional comfort food…
And afterwards?
It’s not just “being full.”
It’s that heavy, uncomfortable, puffy feeling. It’s also sluggishness… the brain fog… the ugh energy.
And as someone who all my life struggled with acne-prone skin, even a tiny amount of sugar triggers it... so my skin this time of the year would normally look worse than ever.
If you’ve ever thought:
“Why does my digestion get so sensitive this time of year?”
or “Why do I feel off for days after just one ‘fun’ meal?”
or “Why can’t I enjoy holidays without paying for it later?”
I want you to hear this:
There’s nothing wrong with you.
You’re not “weak.”
You don’t need to become stricter, smaller, or deprived.
You just need more support.
Because the holidays are not a normal season. They’re a different rhythm - more food, more stress, more stimulation, less sleep, different routines, and usually… a lot less fiber and a lot more of the stuff that your gut has to work harder to process.
That’s why I want to share something that has quietly become my holiday secret weapon…
Not a supplement.
Not a detox.
Not a dramatic “start over Monday.”
Just one simple, ancient habit that helps my body feel calm, clear, and resilient - so I can enjoy the season without feeling punished by it.
Fermentation.
And before your brain goes, “That’s not for me,” I get it.
A lot of people hear fermentation and think:
complicated jars lined up like a science project
strong smells
“I don’t have time”
“I’ll mess it up”
“I don’t even like sauerkraut”
But fermentation isn’t a trend or an aesthetic.
Fermentation is one of the oldest food traditions on earth, because it works.
It helped people preserve food, improve flavor, and support the body in seasons when digestion needed extra help.
And during the holidays? It can be a real game-changer.
The holiday gut is under pressure (and nobody talks about it)
Holiday meals tend to be:
heavier
richer
later at night
higher in sugar and refined carbs
lower in fresh fiber + bitter foods
eaten faster (because conversation, chaos, travel, kids, emotions…)
Add stress on top of that- and your gut feels it.
When your digestion is strained, you might notice:
bloating and discomfort
feeling “heavy” after meals
irregular bathroom habits
low energy or foggy focus
skin flare-ups (yes, your skin often reflects gut stress)
So here’s the gentle truth:
When your gut is supported, the holidays feel different.
You can still enjoy the foods you love - without feeling like your body is in crisis afterwards.
That’s where fermented foods come in.
Why fermentation helps (in real-life terms)
Fermented foods are like a bridge between indulgence and balance.
They can help during the holidays because they tend to be:
easy to add to meals (a spoonful counts)
flavor-packed enough to cut through rich foods
supportive when your routine is off
In simple, everyday language, fermentation can support:
Digestion - helping your body feel less “stuck” and more comfortable after meals
Bloating - especially when you’re eating richer foods than usual
Skin clarity - many people, including myself, notice their skin looks calmer when their digestion is calmer
Energy - because when your gut isn’t overwhelmed, you often feel lighter and more stable
Cravings & balance - fermented flavors can “wake up” your palate and make meals feel more satisfying
And here’s the part I really love:
Fermented foods don’t ask you to give up holiday joy.
They add support around it.
You’re not removing the pie.
You’re adding a spoonful of something that helps your body handle the pie.
That’s a very different approach - and it’s one you can actually maintain.
My “holiday fermentation rule” (so simple it’s almost silly)
When the season gets heavy, I don’t try to become perfect.
I just try to add one small fermented element every day (or even a few times a week).
That might look like:
a spoonful of fermented veggies with lunch
a fizzy probiotic drink in the afternoon instead of another coffee
a tangy fermented topping with dinner
a simple yogurt bowl in the morning (if that works for you)
And the difference is… honestly noticeable.
Not in a dramatic “overnight transformation” way.
But in a quiet, steady:
“I feel lighter.”
“My stomach isn’t so dramatic.”
“My skin isn’t broken out”
“I’m not crashing after meals.”
“I’m enjoying myself more.”
That’s what I want for you this season.
If fermentation feels intimidating, here’s the good news
You don’t need to guess.
You don’t need to scroll random TikToks and hope one works.
