Hi there,
If you feel hungry again an hour after eating… I want you to know something important:
And you’re definitely not alone.
This is one of the most common things people tell me when they’re trying to eat healthier, go gluten-free, or increase protein:
“I’m eating ‘good’ meals… but I’m still hungry all the time.”
So today I want to break down the real reason this happens, and the simple, practical shifts that can change everything.
Because getting hungry again right after eating usually has nothing to do with willpower…
and everything to do with how your meal is built.
The most common reason you’re hungry again after eating
Your meal isn’t keeping your blood sugar stable.
When your meal is mostly carbs (even gluten-free carbs), it digests quickly.
That can cause:
a quick rise in blood sugar
a quick spike in insulin
and then… a crash
And when blood sugar crashes?
Your brain sends the urgent message:
“We need food NOW.”
That’s why it feels so intense, like you need something right away, and usually something sweet, starchy, or snacky.
It’s not you being “undisciplined.”
It’s biology.
Here are the 5 biggest meal mistakes that lead to “I’m hungry again already.”
And more importantly… what to do instead.
1) You didn’t have enough protein
Protein is the #1 macronutrient for staying full.
It slows digestion, supports muscle, and helps stabilize blood sugar.
A lot of people think they’re getting enough…
but when we actually look?
Breakfast is toast + fruit
Lunch is salad + a little chicken
Dinner is gluten-free pasta + sauce
And it’s just not enough.
A good goal: aim for 25–35g of protein per meal (depending on your needs).
If you’re not sure what that looks like, here are quick examples:
2–3 eggs + Greek yogurt
a full serving of chicken, salmon, turkey, or tofu
cottage cheese + berries + chia
protein smoothie with 25g+ protein
beef, lentils, tempeh, shrimp, etc.
If your meal has less than ~20g of protein, hunger often returns fast.

2) Your meal was low in fat
Fat is another big missing piece.
And I know… fat had a bad reputation for years.
But healthy fats are essential for:
satiety
hormone balance
stable energy
cravings control
If you eat a meal that’s mostly carbs + protein but no fat… you may still feel “unsatisfied.”
Try adding:
avocado
olive oil
nuts/seeds
tahini
cheese (if tolerated)
coconut milk
salmon, sardines, egg yolks
Even 1–2 tablespoons of healthy fat can dramatically improve how long you stay full.
3) Your meal was too “gluten-free carb heavy”
Here’s something no one talks about enough:
Going gluten-free doesn’t automatically mean blood sugar friendly.
Many gluten-free staples (bread, pasta, crackers, cereals, muffins) are made from refined starches that digest fast.
That means it’s totally possible to be eating gluten-free and still riding the blood sugar rollercoaster.
Try anchoring meals with:
protein
vegetables
fiber-rich carbs (beans, lentils, sweet potato, quinoa)
healthy fats
A simple formula that works beautifully:
✅ Protein + Fiber + Fat
(and carbs support the meal, not be the meal)
4) You didn’t get enough fiber
Fiber slows digestion and keeps your gut happy.
If your meal is low-fiber, you may feel full quickly… and then hungry again soon after.
Easy ways to add fiber:
add a big handful of veggies (roasted, sautéed, raw)
include beans/lentils
add chia/flax to smoothies or yogurt
berries over bananas
choose quinoa over white rice occasionally
add a side salad
Aim for at least 8–10g fiber per meal if you can.
5) You ate too fast (or while distracted)
This one surprises people.
Satiety signals take time, usually 15–20 minutes, to reach your brain.
So if you eat quickly, your stomach may be full but your brain hasn’t gotten the message yet.
And later?
You feel like you didn’t eat enough.
Try this:
put your fork down halfway through
take a sip of water
slow your breathing
chew a little more than usual
It sounds simple… but it’s powerful.
So what should you eat if you want to stay full for HOURS?
Here are a few real-life examples of “stay-full meals”:
✅ Breakfast
Greek yogurt + berries + chia + nut butter
eggs + cottage cheese + sautéed veggies + avocado
protein smoothie (25g protein) + flax + spinach + frozen berries
✅ Lunch
chicken or tofu bowl: greens + quinoa + olive oil + avocado
tuna salad + roasted sweet potato + crunchy veggies
lentil soup + side salad + olive oil dressing
✅ Dinner
salmon + roasted veggies + rice or potatoes + tahini sauce
turkey burger + salad + roasted carrots
stir-fry with beef/tofu + veggies + cashews
Notice the pattern?
Protein + Fiber + Fat
Every time.
Quick check: Which of these is happening for you?
If you often get hungry again after eating, ask yourself:
Did I have 25g+ protein?
Did I include fat?
Did I eat enough fiber?
Was my meal mostly refined carbs?
Did I eat fast / distracted?
Most people discover they’re missing one key piece, and fixing that one thing changes everything.
